History: The PCFL, founded in 1940, was the top pro league on the West Coast, and is significant because it was an early showcase for black players such as Kenny Washington, Willy Strode, and Jackie Robinson. The league also was the first professional sports league to place a team in Hawaii (the Hawaiian Warriors in 1946). The Los Angeles Bulldogs and Hollywood Bears replicated the baseball Angels-Stars rivalry, and the Bulldogs were the only team to compete in all of the league’s seasons.
